wright twp. — a 29-year-old conklin-area man was hospitalized early saturday after a rollover crash that knocked out power for hundreds of nearby residents in wright township.
just after 1 a.m. feb. 22, deputies from the ottawa county sheriff's office were dispatched to a single-vehicle personal injury crash on eighth avenue north of garfield road.
police said the man was driving his 2017 subaru north on eighth avenue when he left the roadway at a high rate of speed. the vehicle struck a residential driveway and flipped over several times, struck a power pole and broke the pole into several pieces before coming to a rest on its roof in the front yard of a residence in the 15000 block of eighth avenue.
the driver was able to climb out of the vehicle before rescue crews arrived and he was transported to a grand rapids-area hospital via life ems with possible internal injuries.
consumers energy responded to the scene and de-energized the power lines so crews could safely remove the car from the yard. consumers advised that power will remain out in the area until crews can replace the broken pole, which was estimated to be 12:30 p.m. sunday. according to consumers' power outage map, 475 customers were affected.
this incident remains under investigation by the sheriff's office.
